Review on 7014646 Zero Refrigerator Light Switch by Matthew Hall

Revainrating 5 out of 5

simple fix (mostly), sorry i've been waiting

the old switch was broken for a while. Sometimes the light didn't come on when you opened the door, but then came on when you pushed the switch a bit. I was good at it, but it ultimately failed completely. I was concerned this would require a professional. The place we bought it from (about 20 years ago) has great service but they charge about $200 just to come and see it. I've found this to be such a common problem that Sub Zero even has instructions for replacing the switch on their website. We have a Sub Zero 632, but others are probably similar. The switch is actually more or less outside the fridge. Ours is at the top behind a decorative panel that lifts up, other models may have a fold-down grille there. A metal plate that covers both switches and is attached with two screws. It would probably be nice to mark the position and/or take a picture, I found it a bit confusing to put it back in the right spot. With the plate removed you can disconnect the wires from the old switch and gently push down. through the hole. It was actually a bit tricky as we have the switch in the U channel so you can't see what you are doing. A small pair of needle nose pliers might help with the wires, but I'm not sure what tool I used. Installation is also a little painful. The new derailleur was stuck but went in with no lubrication. Connecting the cables was also a problem. I ended up using a mirror, but then you try to work backwards. It took a little effort, but in the end it was done. There are actually two counters on each side (fridge and freezer). One switch for the light, the other for the fan. The two switches are not the same, one is "normally open" and the other is "normally closed". (I think you would say the light switch is "normally closed", meaning when the door is open.) Just to be sure, I checked the fan switch when everything was disassembled and it worked, so I left . alone good enough. Internet research seems to show that the only problem is usually the light switch, but it's not clear why this might be the case.

Pros
  • good product for the price
