I bought this to use as a litter box for my 3 older cats. I've tried almost every bowl on the market and I didn't like any of them. I have two 15 year old cats and a 14 year old. They always use the litter box well, but have been missing it for about a year and have been pissing outside the litter box (they stand in it and pee through the sides). It was very uncomfortable. I've used puppy training mats under and around the crate to prevent accidents but they don't do well with the smell and it was just a mess. My cats don't tolerate closed litter boxes very well and pee in front of the door anyway. I tried one with 3 high sides and they just peed on the front (inlet). I was looking for a larger litter box in hopes that this would help (since even the largest litter boxes on the market aren't much bigger than my largest cat.
