I didn't have high hopes for this call and my suspicions were confirmed. The volume/light is no louder/brighter than most modern phones, likely due to the current flow through the phone line. It is probably due to a technical limitation. The only difference I noticed is that the call has a very high pitch, which may be more noticeable to some people. However, the older relatives suffer from the loss of high-frequency sounds anyway, so this particular effect may be meaningless. The bottom line is that the person I bought this for couldn't hear it and couldn't see it unless they were directly in front of the unit (it doesn't light up a dark room). The best solution would be to develop a relay that activates the connected bell/light, but it's nowhere to be found.
