Beginner Fish Farmers - Read the Guide Here!

This review is for those who have never kept fish before and are looking at this aquarium.1. This is a VERY SMALL aquarium, it can only hold 1 betta OR 2-3 guppies. The rule of thumb is one small fish per gallon. So don't be fooled by the picture on the box of five guppies. The nitrogen cycle in an aquarium can take a while, and small aquariums can be fickle, so be prepared to lose a fish or two along the way. The pool is illuminated with colored LED bulbs - my son thinks they are great and loves them as a night light. If you don't like the disco style, another tank will suit you better.3. The set is not complete. You must also buy: - 5 pounds of gravel; - a non-return valve for the air pump (this is a safety issue and should be included in the kit IMO); - a small heater (look for one rated for a 3 gallon tank). This is especially important if you decide to keep tropical fish instead of bettas); - Replacement filters (plan for new ones every 2 weeks); - Plastic plants, decoration or toys for betta (mirror, hammock); - water conditioner (no pouring tap water into an aquarium, you have to remove all harmful chemicals first, API Stress Coat is great and Tetra has good products); - a small siphon for the weekly water change; - cleaner. Sponge on a stick (don't use the abrasive abrasive sponges you would use for a glass aquarium as the acrylic scraper. Just loading the gravel will scratch the front of mine.) - a 2-3 gallon plastic bucket made for your aquarium (DO NOT use ANYTHING that contains cleaning chemicals - they will kill your fish!); - optional: a timer that allows you to turn off the light at night (you can turn it on and off just by plugging and unplugging, which is tedious). - optional: background attached to the outer rear of the tank (this shields the electrical cables (filter, bubbler and heater) as well as the air hose for visibility and also provides a nice aesthetic appearance). I hope this list helps those who are new to keeping fish - they make great first pets!

Pros
  • Great option for a small home
Cons
  • Doubtful purchase for the elderly
