The instructions say to turn on the remote by pressing the shock or vibrate button on the remote. It does not say that in this case not only will the remote turn on at the first press, but a shock signal will also be sent. I put the collar on the dog and turned on the remote control. By default, the hit level is set to maximum and it is VERY high. Much more than would be necessary for an elephant. This immediately shocked my dog and I felt terrible. You also cannot change the shock setting without turning on the shock on the collar while it is in vibrate mode. Be vigilant and don't accidentally hurt your dog like I did mine.
