Hands are useful for holding the wires in the solder cups when soldering. I cut a small piece of the heat shrink tubing so that when your hands are holding the wire, a small piece of metal can touch the wire. This helps act as a heat sink when soldering so I don't accidentally let the heat through the wire and squeeze the heat shrink tubing until the soldering is complete. In general, everything is fine with magnets. I think this was designed to keep the basics simple to help you when you need an extra pair of hands. It is not intended to be a "mount" of any kind, so please do not use it to support your cameras or anything other than, say, a small circuit board or other knick-knack you are working on. Also, it will hold more weight if you use a denser type of ferrous metal. With the advent of alloys today, it's hard to know how strongly something will stick to them. Cast iron works just as well as solid steel. Hope that helps.
