No, you do NOT need to heat the milk!

No, the milk does not need to be preheated and depending on what type of yoghurt you like it might be best not to. When I first used this machine I gently heated it to 180 degrees and cooled it down to 110 degrees before mixing the starter into the yogurt. I set a timer for 7 hours. What I got was thick, lumpy and overly acidic yogurt. I fed it to the dogs. The next time I skipped the heat, I set the timer for 10 hours and left. Perfection. Silky, perfect, delicious yogurt with no hassles. Since then I've made about 15 batches, using yogurt from the Traderspoint Creamery store as a starter about half the time and using yogurt from the jar the rest of the time. Every time my yogurt comes out just the way I like it. I also use non-homogenized milk, so as it cools, the cream separates and rises to the top. That is delicious. I love this little machine and it has already paid for itself – homemade yoghurt costs about a quarter of what we paid for gourmet yoghurt, even with the best organic milk. It's a lot less of a hassle to just mix some yogurt with milk and pour it into pretty jars. And it works fine.
