First off, the build quality is about what you would expect from an economy class product. The plastic parts are light but strong enough. The buttons are slightly crooked and the top handle is too tight when folded (as it was when shipped). The evaporative media are simply vertical strips of thin wicking material, not the pads you see in a building's evaporative cooler. Also, let me clarify that these personal evaporative coolers are NOT capable of cooling a room. They inherently work best at low "wet-bulb" temperatures (usually low humidity), but they also circulate the air in the room, which increases humidity levels and makes them less effective over time. If you need a cool breeze on your face when you're sitting somewhere, this will work, but don't expect it to have any real impact on the room temperature. I was also surprised to see an insert that offered a $30 refund for a 5 star review. It's inappropriate and for that reason alone I would only trust non-5 star reviews. Edit: Outdoor day test - 96°F inside, 79°F outside at a wet bulb temp of 65°F. Result: 55% efficiency. Not bad! Rated 4 stars for better than expected performance at higher temperatures.
