Works reasonably well but not as well as paper filters. I like to pull out the plunger and pour more water into the press for a second cup. Sometimes the paper filter doesn't stay in place and then I end up in a mess. So I originally bought this to hold paper filters better; didn't work properly. As a full-fledged replacement for paper filters, they are quite suitable. The water spills out quickly and scalds less and leaves more oil residue. My wife doesn't like the oilier taste, so I only use a strainer when making a mug for myself. Cleaning is not difficult, some grains stick to the mesh, but are easily erased.
