Review on Yost Vises Heavy Duty Utility Combination Tool by Neil Bodell

Replacement for my 40 year old Craftsman

After nearly 40 years of using my Japanese Craftsman 391-5180 3.5" Using a bench vise I finally pushed it too far, stretching the bolt and breaking the tracks where the nut slides. After a bit of research, I decided the Yost 445 4.5" vise would be a good replacement. + The Yost base rotates 360º and has two locking screws - one on each side. The base has stops to prevent it from turning without The Craftsman was adjustable less than 180º and had a non-locking stop screw on the base, so you had to make sure the stop screw was VERY tight to prevent that the vise rotates. both sides of the washer between the handle and jaw to make turning easier. The Craftsman didn't have a preload spring - there was more grip play but less friction. The Yost screw looks cast, not machined like the Craftsman. (Think Chinese and Japanese quality.) - The screw was only covered with light oil, I covered it well with a thick layer of lube which made it even easier to turn. Yost's posable jaw moves more than I expected, about the same as the Craftman's after nearly 40 years of use. The description says "rubber discs prevent the handle from slipping unintentionally". However, the washers are too loose to stay in place and prevent the handle from slipping under its own weight. I'm sure it will do what I need, but something tells me it won't and won't last that long. Insults Craftsman has endured for decades! Since I have more bad things to say about Yost than good things, why didn't I buy another Craftsman, specifically 51854? I do not know. Sears seems to be going under fast and I'm not sure if they'll be there to redeem the warranty when I need one. Both vises are very similar, except the Yost has a better pivot point. Equipment, size, weight, price and warranty are almost the same.

Pros
  • 360 degree swivel base with (2) locks adjusts jaw direction for proper placement
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for senior
