I don't have big calves, actually I'm slim. However, over the years I have purchased no-tie socks to avoid the discomfort of ridiculously constricting regular crew socks. That's just the right length - no lower than the flap of your pants, but not quite to the bulge of your muscles. .The material is a good mix of cotton and synthetic so it is soft yet durable. I only wish manufacturers would learn the decency of not advertising themselves with large logos prominently on the clothes I wear. At least the logo is hidden when I wear shoes.
