Benefit from complex installation

I had some doubts about buying this product due to negative reviews, but after several months of installing the device in the 1987 American standard, I can say with confidence that if you follow the instructions carefully (and they are a bit complicated), you will be satisfied with this purchase. $30 is better than $250 for a new double flush toilet, and you'll save hundreds of pounds of pottery in landfill. I have some advice I can give to future buyers of this device: Read the instructions first before installing the device. This is a good guideline for any setup, but these instructions are really at what I would call a layman's limit. Also, the manufacturer's support really can't be relied on - I made two calls on two different days during business hours and both times I was put through to voicemail. You never called me back. Fortunately, I was able to solve my problem myself (see "Third" below). Second, everything to install this device requires /hard/ pressure, and almost every part that moves in this device locks or moves with a loud click. clicking sound. You will think that something broke at least once during the installation and calibration. Don't let that scare you. Be careful, but don't be too careful. Third, if you install a dual flush converter, it comes with a blue float (which determines the amount of water used in a light flush) set to the highest point (lowest point). possible amount of water). As part of the calibration process, the instructions will ask you to test the toilet with a light flush by moving the blue float down until the bowl is completely empty each time. I have found that repeated flushing of the toilet with a light flush gives a false positive. (an easy flush will succeed if the blue float is still set too high) and then you won't get successful easy flushes later, which can be frustrating (and frustrating). I found that a trial toilet flush with just four clicks from the highest setting resulted in false successful light flushes, but it took me about five clicks from the lowest setting for a consistent successful flush over several days. That's still a lot less water than is used for a full flush! I recommend the following: 1) Install and calibrate the device according to the instructions. 2) Firmly push the blue float until it reaches its lowest point (the maximum amount of water possible). This creates a loud crackle; Again, don't worry, you didn't break anything. 3) Use the toilet as usual for a day or two. 4) Once you find that the toilet always glows successfully with this setting, pull the blue float up. three clicks. 5) Repeat steps 2-4 until light flushes failed. 6) Push the blue float down one click. 7) Use the toilet as usual for a day or two. 8) If you start having unsuccessful light flushes, repeat steps 6 and 7 until you stop. 9) Have peace of mind knowing your light output is properly calibrated. Update: Bought two more for the upstairs bathrooms! Update May 2014: I have found that the included zip tie securing the flow meter to the fill tube has broken on all three of my installations, the last of which I did just last year. I believe the rubber o-ring around the filler tube is still holding the seal so I don't think it's a major fault, but be aware that on initial installation you can replace the included zip tie with a stronger one You buy yourself. Update December 2014: In the interests of full disclosure, since this review is getting so much attention, one of my rigs failed after about 26 months. My other two still work and I'm guessing it wasn't a hardware defect. We had one of these - Kaboom with OxiClean Scrub Free! System-1kt - Installed and it looks like a highly concentrated cleaning solution has seeped into the tank. I think what happened is that the cleaning solution in the tank ate the inner seal in the flush valve, which is what happens. Under no circumstances should cleaning solution be poured into the toilet cistern. The fault was minor, it dripped very slowly, but every time it dripped there was a loud ping that echoed throughout the house. I couldn't fix it by tampering with the valve so I had to leave. Rather than install another of these units, we decided that 25 years is a good mileage and installed one of these: American Standard 2989.101.020 Cadet Concealed Siphon 3 Right Height Extended Flowise 1.28 gpf Sitting Toilet, White. Update December 2017: My two remaining rigs are still working great five and a half years later.
