For a radio that is about 18 years old and still being produced and updated this is an incredible radio. It is beautifully designed and the controls are easy to use. It features state-of-the-art double-conversion circuitry followed by digital audio processing, giving it relatively high sensitivity, adjustable bandwidth, and unexpectedly good sound quality. I'm a radio amateur (ham radio) and just wanted a portable receiver for more than just the amateur bands. but also SW/LW areas. As a quick test, I compared the PL880 on the 40m and 20m ham radio bands (under low-noise conditions) to just the fully extended whip antenna in my upstairs office, with my Elecraft KX2 connected to an external power supply. Half wave (EFHW) wire antenna. To my great surprise, the reception was almost the same, only with a slight drop to the outside antenna. From the internal whip antenna! IMPRESSIVE. In short, I will keep and love this little radio. I like the many features that show developers know and understand signal processing technology and aren't dragging dumb users by the legs with useless switches and knobs. This is a real radio, and a good one. I had a radio not long ago but if my opinion changes I will come back and update my review.
