I've "rescued" scratched cats in the past and have never had a problem using furniture as a scratching post. Although we have several spots for our new cat, she preferred the furniture. So I started looking for a solution. We've tried repellent sprays for furniture and catnip sprays for poles. For free. Found this thread while searching. These are actually sheets of clear plastic used to cover areas of the padding that the cat "loves". Each sheet has paper on both sides. The sheet can be cropped to fit the area you wish to cover. The outside of the leaf is rough and uncomfortable for cats' claws. Peel off the paper on one side, and then attach the plastic to the furniture. Then delete the other sheet. It worked really well to put an end to our cat's furniture claws and she now uses soft cat gates. I would recommend this anti scratch tape to other cat owners.
