Not sure why the reviews are bad. The ashtray matches the photos, especially those in user reviews. I like the polished red bronze. The color hides the ash well. It's not so brittle that it deforms easily, as one reviewer said. He probably went to too much trouble removing the lid. It was very difficult to remove the cover the first time. Be sure to take it off before use and then put it back on, not so tight. I put baking soda in it to mask the smell and it was very subtle. Exactly what I wanted and it holds a lot of cigarette butts. The lid's opening and closing mechanism works well, but I don't expect it to work forever. This type of ashtray always ends up in a problem when the lid doesn't close completely after a while. But so far so good. Better than a tape measure if you're looking for something that doesn't scream ashtray, but for outdoor patios where you plan to leave the ashtray out all the time, an ashtray with a tape measure is probably fine.
