Before I decided on this pair I spent a lot of time reading and researching scissors and scissor metals. This is the cheapest pair of scissors from a company that makes professional quality scissors. The main difference between these scissors and scissors made from more expensive metals is how often they need to be sharpened and their overall lifespan. Scissors made of relatively soft metal need to be sharpened every 50-100 haircuts. Scissors made from Hitachi steel (high quality 440c) can last up to 25 times longer before needing sharpening. Scissors can only be sharpened 4-5 times before they need to be replaced. If you are a professional barber doing 10 cuts a day, the difference is whether you need to send scissors to be sharpened every few weeks and every year, or need to replace every 2 months or a few years. However, if you just do a haircut at home, a softer steel will do. I believe these shears will last my family about 2 years before they even need to be sharpened for the first time.
