Apparently my cartilage is 18G because I had to push them through which was perfectly normal and didn't hurt. I will say that I have probably had this piercing for 25 years. And one thing I found is that it's hard to get eggs there. I used to have horseshoes with balls. I love the fact that they have a little jewel because it actually gives you more friction to put it on. However, it is also a fall. I haven't made up my mind yet and will update my review later, but the gem digs your ear too. I haven't decided yet if this will be a permanent problem or if it's just something I have to get used to. But I really liked it and would buy it again! Edit to add: I wore them for two weeks and tightened them daily to make sure they didn't loosen or fall out. I woke up this morning to one of the ends being gone. Sigh. Edit to add: A month later my ear was still in constant pain so I finally removed my piercing yesterday and today there is no pain in that ear.
