I started with Shure M97xE and then upgraded to AT440MLA which is very "detailed" and "understandable" (but be careful , as it includes a tricky curves equalizer) . In any case, while the AT440MLA is a great kart, it lacks bass and mids. It's too difficult to get those frequencies out, even with the extra EQ. On some recently remastered recordings like MJ's "Thriller" (Picture Disc ltd. Edition 2008) it sounds too bright and can cause listening fatigue. Always looking for perfection, I chose MC Carts. I really trust Audio Technica so I wanted to try the AT33EV. Well, when the AT33EV came to me, things seemed to get better. After 8-10 hours of break-in, the detail and clarity of the AT440MLA was still there, but now the bass and mids were there too! Also, there was no surface noise! (it was a real and pleasant surprise). Some of the old recordings like "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Abraxas" by Santana are now alive again and sound better than the CD, too clear, too detailed, powerful, clean. lots of detail, clarity, flat frequency response and "CD tone", NO SURFACE NOISE (unless the record is too worn). As Audio Technica's description says, "This is a perfectionist cartridge." Of course, this is an entry-level MC, but if you're from the world of MM, you'll be pleasantly surprised and happy with your purchase. Don't forget to spend about 8 hours playing the game to get used to it. Then enjoy like a little kid.
