I use my phone as a timer when cooking but I often need to time two things at once so I ordered two packs of Knightsped kitchen timers. These aren't the heavy kitchen timers of your youth, but lightweight plastic digital timers that do the job well. There are three buttons on the front to set the time, start and stop the timer. Pressing the minute and second buttons simultaneously clears the timer and resets it to zero. A small switch on the back allows you to toggle between silent and alarm modes. For a tiny device, the alarm is pretty loud (like a smoke detector). One annoying feature is that when in alarm mode, the alarm will sound every time you press the buttons to set the time - I could do without that. Also, the description says it will count both up and down. I only need it for countdown, so I'll agree that it doesn't seem to change them to countdown anyway, but if the countdown (stopwatch) feature is important to you, I'd look elsewhere. The magnets on the back are strong enough to stick to the fridge.
