You can't expect a 17 year old truck like my Ram '04 to be perfect. I was still surprised to learn the hard way how loosely those plastic knobs attach to the A-pillar. My stock crank was messed up so I ordered a few aftermarkets which seemed to have an improved design (gap fully closed). I was still using those reinforcement pads and figured they would work well to keep the OEM pads from cracking. It took some courage, but now I use the grip all the time like I used to on my Ford truck. I weigh about 200 pounds so I think the inner and outer reinforcement of these parts will help secure this grip well enough that I don't end up back on the ground. I used the original screws as they were easier to screw in and tightened them with an impact wrench. If the outer shell is loose on the plastic, all you need is some tape to hold it in place as you rotate. They may have been edited to match the OEM size and not what I used. This wasn't a problem, I wrapped tape around each post and attached them to it to keep them centered and secure. I'm not trying my luck but the pen seems strong and secure enough to be used again. This decision is commendable.
