I took the advice of other reviewers and applied it directly to damp hair before coloring. The product worked where the hair was extremely saturated but given the bottle is so small I wasn't able to saturate my whole head and it shows. The roots were saturated with the part as expected, since this is the healthiest part it was easier to introduce the product into it. The rest of my hair, which is more damaged from the bleaching, had trouble applying the product properly so it's an ugly taupe now and I need to figure out how to fix it. I used a medium brown hair color that seemed to have red tones, but I don't think it was red enough. To be honest, I didn't follow the directions on the bottle, but rather the advice of other customers. The reason I took off the stars is mainly because I lost large strands of hair during the treatment (before, during and after). with hair dye, not just when I've used dye). I read on another site that another user also experienced this. It was pretty scary and now I'm afraid to do anything else with it to fix the gray hair. Also, the quantity is very small for the price. You can get the same bottle at Sally's for $10 less, which I didn't realize until I bought it. I suggest calling your local Sally's first to see if they have them in stock. I also recommend getting two bottles if you have medium to long hair. One bottle is definitely not enough for my medium-length hair. I also suggest using a dye with very light shades of red if you have bleached blonde hair that you want to go brown. The photo of my hair afterwards doesn't really show the true result of how much gray it is, but it's very obvious in person and definitely not a pretty, healthy brown, even in the picture. By the way, I bought the red-red color with the intention of "filling in" the strands before dyeing, so that my hair does not turn gray.
