I bought this tool solely for chain riveting. I have a separate Motion Pro chain breaker that I use on 530 chain after grinding the rivets flush. I think a lot of the negative reviews about this tool must be due to misuse of the tool. I am good with my tools and I know the limitations of their intended use. Even the best tool breaks if used improperly. That being said, there are much cheaper chain breaking tools out there than this one. So if you really want to break chains, just buy a special chain breaker or use your grinder to just cut the entire chain right off the bike. For my purpose, riveting hollow core nose links on 530 chains works fine. I disassembled the tool and lubricated all threads with high pressure grease such as molybdenum chassis grease. You want these surfaces to be clean and lubricated to prevent galling and seizing. The tool is provided with a very thin layer of oil, which only serves to protect against corrosion and does not bring any real lubricating benefits. Apply lubricant to the threads. The pressure plates rotate inside the tool and can easily fall out when trying to tip the tool under the swivel arm, so I smeared every drop of sticky lube on them to give them a little bit of adhesion, which worked great. I had to remove the tool from the chain 5-10 times throughout the job, but I was just careful. Broad. Don't press too hard. Use vernier calipers to check the diameter of the freshly riveted "mushroom" and check with the chain manufacturer for an acceptable diameter range. Don't distort too much and if you see cracks in the rivet mushroom you will need to sand it down and start over as the main joint is now compromised.
