I have the unit I received paralleled (while running) to 2 batteries on my truck via a high amp short 14-AWG outlet -Cables connected, but it couldn't even support 200W (tested). via Kill-A-Watt meter) no shutdown with red LED and alarm - standard notification for all issues: under-voltage, over-voltage, over-current, etc. I suspect the over-current circuit was misconfigured or had a defective component. as the 600w burst wasn't even close - I used a 43w bulb and saw it as a load (150w) but adding another 43w bulb resulted in the shutdown. Get a replacement and update the review if the next one turns out to work as a review. I've been told it's a good brand with quality components, I hate how seldom bad gear always comes across to me!
