Former military policeman who spent a lot of time in the field (Korea, Germany). I learned the Land Nav course and can say this is a keeper. I don't know if the issues in the reviews were flaws in previous models or user error/knowledge. I would trust my addiction and my family's addiction if I went into the field. This compass actually has more features (clinometer) and is comparable in accuracy to the lens I used in the army. I definitely recommend this compass to everyone. The functions of this compass are more advanced than a simple basic compass so a beginner may not understand how to use it except to find the direction of travel.
