Review on Idealist by Brett Jarvis

Idealist is a useful database for volunteer opportunities

I have been using idealist for over 10 years to look up local nonprofits in my area of interest. The search function works really well! It's easy enough to use without creating an account but you do need one if you want more features like filtering by location or type (i.e., volunteering). There are some quirks about how it displays results which make me wonder why they haven't updated their interface since 2005-ish? For example, when searching under "Volunteering" there was no way to sort alphabetically so after clicking through several pages all volunteers would be listed at the bottom; this isn't helpful as most will fit into just 1 page anyway. Also, sometimes searches don't return any matches even though there should still be many options available from your region/city. This may not affect everyone else who uses idealist but because we're looking mostly for small groups within our city limits I.
