I started with the underside, which would be less visible, while experimenting with how best to place these buttons. I tried using the plastic tool I bought here on Amazon, I think it was Dritz? What a waste of money! Totally useless which I would have known if I read more reviews. So I had no choice but to look at her. But one thing I found out early on that made it MUCH EASIER was to use an awl to poke the hole. After that, scoring them was easy. My project consisted of upholstery fabric, quilting and then plywood. I attached a felt furniture leg to the hammer, as these nails dent easily. I wasn't interested in buying an expensive hammer specifically for this one project. This type of project requires patience and a few hours, but I think it was worth it! In my case I reused the previous headboard and all the materials so the only cost was new batting, fabric and those buttons. Remarkably, I just saw them in the Hobby Lobby and they were way more expensive there!
