Review on Portable mSATA SSD Adapter Board with USB3 to SATA III Data Cable for Convenient Usage (ZY603+S103PCBA) by Robert Moloney

Revainrating 1 out of 5

It worked fine for a month but soon broke down, probably due to a bad cable.

I bought this device to read and write data from my Dell Latitude e6430 laptop to a 500GB SATA SSD via USB 3.0. I wanted to use to store and quickly access frequently changing data with the high speed of the SSD. I had initial problems with a similar connector from Revain, which simply wouldn't make a working connection and because it didn't have a power and data indicator. to diagnose what was wrong, or whether the device was defective or the problem was with the SSD was unknown. With this model, with its power and data flow indicator lights, I could tell when it was working, and for high-speed data, it worked well for about a month, a very short time. A serious, inherent flaw stems from the poor design of the part of the cable that connects to the USB port. which logically should affect all units as a major disadvantage. The voltage drop does not work properly, and combined with a poor quality cable insulator, any repetitive stress in that area of the cable will cause the insulator to crack, exposing the power/data cables, indicating the cables are about to break should not be used now, one month after correct repeated use where the computer was regularly moved during portable use. Be careful with this - it takes work and can be valuable when repaired, but is otherwise only used for temporary emergencies. The defects appear to be irreparably endemic and can only be remedied by reworking the stress-reducing connection and using a better, stronger, shatterproof cable. The rest of the design and usage is good. The device must be recycled; I would consider a refurbished model but only buy this model in an emergency. Future failure can be easily predicted with a simple inspection.

Pros
  • Rugged design
Cons
  • No auto mode
