The wheel is not required to play, but it's fun

You can play the game without the plastic wheel, but it's still fun. At the end of the day, it's just entertainment, so spend your extra cabbage and enjoy the game the way it's meant to be played. Just plug the controller into the wheel and you're ready to play. If your controller has a bottom extension, you will need to remove the "Plus" portion to fit the wheel to make it a "Wii Plus" controller. That's intuitive.
