My 11 year old son is small for his age and I have ordered the XL and hopefully next year he will have room to wear it. The zip is amazing (for those looking for a great zip). The zip moves up and down very easily and feels solid (it doesn't snag and a small child doesn't seem to have any trouble zipping up their own jacket). The jacket is very warm, it is made of cotton and polyester but looks like an alpaca jacket, similar to a sweatshirt. The jacket shrinks around the wrist and waist, and if you buy a slightly larger jacket, it still fits well.
