I hate smelly chemical dryer sheets so they work. If you need scent, you can use a few sachets of lavender (I use Trader Joe's) tossed in the dryer with the balls. After a while they will bunch up a bit (bags) so you can open them, spread lavender buds on rugs, suck them up to freshen the air and your vacuum bag. Balls of wool tumble silently, unlike rubbery, spiky dryer shapes like cute hedgehogs (I bought them first). I don't think they perform better because of the spikes. There's a bit more static in winter, but just look for that single sock on the inside of your blanket and life goes on.
