I previously purchased a "chalk block" as my first experience with chalk when my deadlift was in the 300 pound range and my grip was slipping. As far as block goes, there's not much to say in comparison other than that chalk is a huge help and every lifter should have one in their pocket. However, using the chalk block turned out to be too messy, even when I kept it in a plastic bag in my gym bag. I chose this because I found it much easier to keep the chalk from spilling all over the place and I was right. I still recommend putting it in a plastic bag and putting your hand in the bag to squeeze the bag, but to be honest it's a lot more convenient to have a bag on hand than a simple "pad" " or a bowl of chalk like I've seen at some other gyms. . Inexpensive and useful when you start working with big weights, this is a must have.
