The heating element is in the kettle, so in the water - I don't know how long it will last. The kettle should only stand on the base one way - there is a blind hole in the bottom of the kettle handle that goes through the electrical connector in the base. The base keeps the kettle above the worktop so it doesn't get very hot (kettle heating element). Dosing is painful and difficult to control. Don't expect sufficient accuracy when pouring a small amount of water from a kettle. The kettle heats water pretty quickly so I wanted to try it. I don't care how it looks, just IF it works. I use it on a table and IMHO it's not an item you want to show people. I wanted a unit without an LED lighting system, so this severely limited my choices.
