I have soldered most of 15 years. Yes this is a cheap soldering iron and I bought this to teach my 7 and 8 year olds how to solder and understand electronics (with appropriate adult safety and supervision of course!). For the price, however, it is absolutely outstanding and great for beginners or for a fast and portable soldering iron. Everything about it is as good as it gets in the price range. - He's got pace. Control - Comes in a very nice plastic case - Comes with a very good pair of tweezers specially designed for soldering - Very good, long and strong cable - The sponge is also good and even lasts a while - The stand for the holder is nice and heavy, it doesn't feel like it's going to tip over or slide anywhere - The extra tips that come with it are useful and of decent quality - The tips are easy to change Cons: - The tiny "trial pack" Poor quality solder it comes with. Just buy new resin core electronic board. - The arrow on the temperature controller was erased after a day of use. Be sure to use a marker to mark where the >temperature arrow is. Controls - I wish the case was a little bigger. Of course, if you're serious about soldering and do it more than once or twice a week, you'll need a much more expensive piece of equipment, but for the price, it's just amazing and pleasantly surprising. I bought this because I _thought_ that it would basically be a short-lived iron for my kids to use to learn to solder, and I'll buy a better iron later. However, it turned out to far exceed my own expectations. To be honest if you showed me this set and asked how much you think it would cost I would say 3x the actual cost if not 5x the price. As I said, the only downside is that the inscriptions are erased. marked for temperature control. Attach it with a marker, a small piece of tape, or whatever else you can think of. Then - and I'm not sure what's wrong with that - but the solder "sample" they sent in the kit is rubbish, buy a decent $5 e-rosin coil somewhere Dollars and you'll get yourself a soldering kit. It costs 5 times what you paid here. Everything else is of amazing quality, right down to the included tweezers and sponge. Will be a great gift.
