The official current US military version costs more than 10 times. This is a full featured lens compass with limitations; but perfect for backyard adventures or those wanting to learn lens compass techniques. The biggest and most obvious limitation is that the bezel doesn't stay where it's rotated. The phosphorescent direction indicators and frame markings work in semi-darkness and in the dark as long as they are lit. The magnetic map is pointing north as closely as I can tell, within a few degrees. The card itself is liquid dampened but tends to stick if held just above level. The lens is transparent, the rear and front sight slots are correctly aligned. The center point for reading degrees is only marked by a dent on the lid hinge; it should be clearly visible, but a drop of paint can fill in the "dent". The lid snaps securely into place. Thumb ring fits fingers and strap. The thick plastic construction doesn't quite match good metal for durability, but I'd rather have it than the cheap flimsy sheet metal I've seen. It's fully waterproof in case you're still wondering. BTW, the compass card has the manufacturer's logo (Sailboat) and lettering (Taiwan) that I've seen on some other "lower priced" compasses.
