Review on High Definition Planar Helium PCT2435 Monitor with HDMI Connectivity - Model 997-9363-00 by Wess Carstensen

Large but ultimately poor touchscreen

I have this monitor on my desk after one of my bosses spotted it online and thought it was cool. He bought it with the intention of developing a touchscreen app to capitalize on it, but I'm far from impressed. Pros: - It's big - Overall it's pretty slick, draws a lot of attention from people walking past my desk - It's bright, I turned the brightness down a bit to ease my eyes - Multi-touch works Cons : - First of all: the display itself is quite far from the glass surface. If you are not looking directly at the screen, the touched area and the corresponding area on the display will not match. This leads to some seriously frustrating situations. Smartphone and tablet manufacturers are constantly improving the proximity of their displays to the touch layer - this monitor is the complete opposite. - Color accuracy and screen saturation are pretty poor - The 1920 x 1080 resolution on a 27-inch screen beats it in terms of pixel count. Color fringing can be seen on the pixel-wide lines, and fonts don't render well. I've tried adjusting ClearType but to no avail - viewing angles aren't great. It's not as bad as my ASUS VK266h, but it's not an IPS panel. - The included stylus broke as soon as I tried to use it. The rubber protrusion immediately fell back into the metal bar, leaving me with a stick that would only be useful for pressing the screen. - OSD touch controls combined with OSD sluggishness end up being awkward to use - The display is angled and glossy . I get a nice reflection from the fluorescent lights all the time.- The display is pretty low too. I'm eye level with the webcam up, which means I'm always looking down to see the monitor. itself.- The glass surface of the display is not smooth. A certain ripple can be seen in the light reflections and can be clearly felt when you run your finger over the screen. It looks pretty awful and a far cry from the silky smoothness of an iPad screen. Also, I tried simple things like drawing a line in Paint and lost touch. The webcam quality is a typical monitor webcam quality, also known as fairly low quality. Because the screen is at an angle to the stand, your head will be at the bottom of the frame unless it's completely cropped. Considering how expensive this screen is, I expected a much better quality. I'm just glad I didn't actually pay for it. I used it as a secondary monitor and my ASUS VK266h took center stage. I can't recommend enough to skip planar.

Pros
  • Multiple inputs make it easy to connect multiple devices at the same time.
Cons
  • Poor color accuracy
