I love these filters and have been using them for many years! And they're absolutely essential if you're into guppies because you can put in a calcium reactor medium (aragonite) to create the right pH and mineral environment for guppies and prevent pH swings that guppies don't like. Aragonite also prevents them from swimming and provides a base for biofilter organisms. But that only applies to "guppys", because most other tropical fish do not like slightly alkaline and semi-hard calcium-based water. But these filters need weight, and there are many ceramic filter materials on the market today that make them heavier and also provide a base for biofilter organisms to colonize.
