Review on Hewlett Packard P9615A ABA HP 23" Wide Screen Monitor - P9615A#ABA by Jeff Bennett

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nearly perfect.

I received it just before Christmas 2005 when it was fairly new (thanks to an enthusiastic recommendation from Anandtech) and have been very happy ever since. Excellent color reproduction and clarity, not a single dead pixel in 6 years (I can see that and I'm pretty picky about such things), good viewing angles, doesn't overheat and doesn't consume too much power, lots of good options in the menu (more than most other companies), a good selection of inputs, can also be used as a small TV. Overall a great monitor. Yes, there are better displays today, but it was considered the best in the line-up back then and will stand for many years to come. The only negatives are really picky. I sometimes get weird results when trying to choose between screen fill, one-to-one fill, and aspect ratio, but it only happens with a few resolution combinations, and most of the day I still use the native resolution. It's nice to be able to play HD videos full screen in VLC while still leaving some space at the bottom for the control panel. It's fast enough for gaming too, but I still prefer a quality CRT for them. While it's nice that it supports the proper 1600 x 1200 resolution for older games, while the 1080p resolution is capped at 1280 x 960 or 1024. Overall, this is a great buy for anyone who wants a high-quality, widescreen desktop monitor. I bought it new so I can't speak to used or refurbished models. As inexpensive as they are, I would recommend getting an extended warranty from a company you trust.

Pros
  • Ideal for advanced users
Cons
  • The monitor has a very low resolution.
