After my DirecTV was struck by lightning nearby, it sent an error message stating that my TV does not support adequate protection. This little guy helped me figure out which HDMI cables and/or connectors were removed. Having no experience with HDMI testers, I wasn't entirely sure if this could be used just on a cable or to test a port with the cable attached. You can test both cables and suspicious ports. So, once you determine that you have a good cable (after plugging both ends into the main tester), you can plug it into the HDMI port you are testing (either with the "remote" main tester, the slot, or the smaller "remote" tester yourself ) and see if everything is working properly. If everything is ok and you have a good quality (fully connected) HDMI cable, all indicators will light up together with a bluish light to indicate that everything is in Okay. My ports were missing about half the indicators and the tester showed a "short" with a red light. Interestingly, the ports were damaged by a lightning strike, but the cables were in good condition. Don't expect much help from an obscure manual but the device is easy enough to figure out for yourself For the money I definitely recommend having it if you're going to install HDMI Good to know this one 8 year old horrible looking cable still works.
