Review on LG 27UK650-W Monitor: FreeSync Technology, 4K Ultra HD, Tilt & Height Adjustment, Anti-Glare IPS Screen by Ryan Gould

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The HDR effect mode is amazing!

I use this monitor a lot with my Xbox One X and it's really amazing! I've tried other 4K monitors like the Samsung U32H750 and LG just blows it out of the water with crisp 4K, vivid colors and stunning contrast - and of course HDR which makes everything look noticeably better! I have a lot to say about this monitor and the best settings I find useful for gaming and media on the Xbox One X. First, here are the settings I typically use for non-HDR content, ie non-HDR gaming and YouTube: Mode Images : HDR EffectBrightness 85 Black Level - LowDeep Color OnFreesync - On ExtendedResp. Time is fast. All other settings are set by default. On the Xbox One X, the settings are as follows: The color depth is 10 bits. These settings will give you a great picture when it comes to non-HDR content. Now there's something very important to note: Make sure your monitor's HDMI black level is set to "Low" as it should match the standard Xbox color space. . So make sure you set a low black level. I'm pretty sure if it's set to High and you can't change it to Low, play around with how to change the settings on the Xbox, then track and eventually it will go to Black Low. The contrast ratio of the monitor may be 1000:1 but let me tell you it's very, very impressive, especially compared to another 4k monitor I tried that was 3000:1. I thought LG looked 10x better! One of the reasons I bought this monitor was HDR and for those who find it bad for not being "true HDR 1000 nits" it looks amazing and most games look really good (MH World looks looks terrible). Elder Scrolls Online looks really amazing with the colors (don't forget to turn up the brightness in game), I mean just go to Coldharbour and you'll see :). However, some games don't have good HDR, so sometimes it's better to disable HDR in the Xbox settings and use custom settings on the monitor. The monitor has 4 HDR modes: HDR Vivid, HDR Game, HDR Standard, HDR Cinema. For gaming, HDR Game is the best and most accurate for colors, response times, etc., but if you don't care about accuracy and like losing your monitor's life expectancy due to post-processing, Vivid's HDR can be impressive with fantastic flowers. HDR Standard and Cinema look too boring to me, so I always stick with Game. Now this monitor uses an IPS panel and that's probably why the contrast, brightness and colors are so good. There's some IPS Glow, and you'll be lucky if you get a monitor with a lot of IPS Glow or little. I've tried 4 of these LG monitors in the last 2 months and finally settled on the one I have now because I bought it really cheap and unfortunately my previous one wouldn't turn on so I returned it. The one I have now has minimal IPS glow, thank goodness, but just expect to see IPS glow because every IPS monitor has it. Unfortunately this monitor uses an external power supply, but I mean does that really matter? I have room for it but the only thing I worry about is if it gets really hot as my monitor is usually on 10 hours a day. HDR content is detected or when HDR Effects mode is used. It doesn't matter as most of the default settings are actually how you want them to be. Rely on post-processing to produce stunning color, contrast, and brightness, but they're bad for your monitor's life expectancy. I still use the HDR effects mode because it's too good. I give it a 4.8/5, be sure to buy if you need a 4k/HDR monitor for your console and you can get this monitor cheap for around $385-$490 or so. I bought it for $435 and it's a steal for what you get! 500 is too expensive but that's just my opinion lol. ^_^
