Review on LG 27UK650-W Monitor: FreeSync Technology, 4K Ultra HD, Tilt & Height Adjustment, Anti-Glare IPS Screen by Hedgeworth Debwany

Revainrating 5 out of 5

From a technology executive's perspective, not a gamer's.

I'm a CTO who hooked this up to a 2018 Mac Mini and uses it for both work and personal use. I also have a mid 2015 MacBookPro which I like for the clarity of the Retina display. I'm running the latest and greatest version of OSX (currently Mojave) on both machines. Prior to this purchase, I connected the Mini to a 23-inch, 1900 x 1200 Apple Cinema Display circa 2002 (no typo). It was surprisingly good, but I always wished I was watching a retina-quality output. I took the trouble to write this review because I found other people's reviews that helped me to buy this monitor (LG 27UK650-W 27). I've had it for 2 full weeks, am very happy with it and have avoided many mistakes by reading other people's reviews. I cry ahead 60 Hz, USB 3.1 Type C to DisplayPort cable2) Be careful not to touch the front of the panel when unpacking, moving, adjusting the height, or rotating the display; always from above/below or from the side; it's easy - be careful 3) note that there are no speakers on the display, only stereo output 4) download the Onscreen Control app from the LG website; makes it easy to adjust the settings you use most often. This allows you to make advanced settings. 6) If you are using VMware Fusion (I use Windows 10 for specific purposes), you need to go to VM => Settings => Display Panel and uncheck "3D Graphics Acceleration" if you want to work with it in full screen mode. Otherwise it becomes unusable. But you *can* choose "3D Graphics Acceleration" and use single window mode. *** Post-Troubleshooting: If you wish, you can leave "3D Graphics Acceleration" selected and increase the total graphics memory to the recommended amount (1024MB for me). 7) Learn about using macOS spaces (multiple desktops); You don't want to expand your applications to full screen; they are just too big. However, you can still host applications on different desktops. After plugging in the DP to USB-C adapter, turning on the monitor, and turning on the Mac mini, everything worked. I knew I was in a good place when I went into System Preferences => Display and saw the same scaling options as on my MBP. See first picture. The standard resolution was too high for me (1920 x 1080 at 60Hz). The second picture shows my current selection (2560 x 1440 at 60 Hz). Obviously screen resolution is a matter of personal preference; I think that's the right compromise between font size and screen real estate. The text I type has the same clarity as my Retina display but on a larger monitor. I suppose I could reduce the font size (3008 x 1692 at 60Hz) to get more space. The thing is, it's my choice - every one of them looks amazing. Other observations: * Works the night shift. * The screen saver / sleep mode works. * You will be surprised at how far away the menu bar at the top of the screen is from many applications. * As far as I can tell, there are no dead pixels on the display. Or maybe they're so tiny I just can't see them.* I don't see the IPS leaks that some people complain about. Both my windows background and my mac are black and I can't see any bleeding. (See two pictures.)* I find the stand stable. I'm not a gamer. I work with text and numbers all day and my apps look great. Although I'm not a graphic designer, I spend a lot of time on images and graphics and they look great to me. I can't say anything about the calibration of the display, but the colors seem good to me. After 2 weeks of intensive use I am satisfied with the camper. Fingers crossed that the monitor's reliability is as good as its looks. Hope that helps. Just an update, after 6 weeks of using this monitor my opinion hasn't changed: I still love it. Another update: 6 months and no change to my rating. Not a minute of equipment problems.
