Great stereo shelf but if you don't buy the base you get your own hardware
The shelf can definitely be used without a base if assembled correctly. My unit does not come with screws and washers to attach the legs - if you read the instructions you will get the hardware with the base which I did not purchase. The box says "hardware included" and I agree this is misleading. For a few dollars and some time, purchase the following screws and washers from the hardware store and you're done: four black 1/4-20 x 2-inch Phillips screws and four 6mm washers (black if you can find them be able). ). them - otherwise the silver is fine as they are hidden by the screw heads. With the hardware setup the shelf is very solid.
