I am very happy with this purchase but it requires a little understanding of how it works.

Hello. I used an electric starter with a loop and it was good but one day I lost track of time and part of the handle melted so it was time to buy something new. I've used it about 10 times now and I really like it. Unlike the sling, once I start the fire I don't have to go back and take out the hot iron and put it on a plate as I have a patio, not a patio. This guy is standing alone but I put a plate under him anyway but he never fell down or anything. Now there are videos and stuff on how to use this launcher. I've found that building a small mountain that looks like a pile of lumps of charcoal is best. Then I push and hold the starter and after a while you get a spark. I usually check to see if the coals are done or not and I might keep them there a little longer. After the embers are lit, I begin to slowly pull back and hold the air on the ember until it turns very red-orange. Most of the time it's already burning and I let the other coals heat up by themselves. Another benefit is that I can now lower the grill down a bit and when guests want to make s'mores, I simply remove the top grill (I have the middle section of the grate that can come loose) and blow hot air on the coals and they heat up nicely and burn well again. I couldn't do that with an iron loop before. One thing I don't like is that sometimes the air is so strong that it can throw more sparks in the air, so just be careful and keep that in mind. But not as much as when I had to pull the iron out from under the coal. So maybe this one is neutral. Finally, my coals aren't moving anymore. I can set them up however I want and they shine and stay put. With the hinge because it was at the bottom, the coals moved when I pulled it out and I had to rearrange them to even out the heat. So it works fine. I am very happy with it. I even relighted unlit coals a few days ago, but it took a little longer to get trapped but lit. I suggest you mix in a few pieces of new charcoal and finish off what's left of the previous burn. Hope this helps others. Good luck and happy grilling!
