Review on Pair of Jamo S 803 Walnut Speakers by David Boulanger

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Value over $200

Previously owned: cbm 170 se, cbm 340 se and Def Tech 7006 Owned: NHT Classic, Paradigm Studios, B&W 6 Series, Martin Logans and JBL Headphones: Audio Technica AD700, Grado SR120, Phillips SHP950S Receiver: Pioneer VSX 1019AH I'm not an expert, that's just my observation Pro: Rich in detail without shrill noise. Music from Youtube will be difficult to listen to, download FLAC files. Tight bass gives piano and strings a percussion feel Separation of instruments in a reasonably sized soundstage (currently used in a desktop setup) Lively and happy sound signature compared to neutral cbm 170se/340se Magnetic speaker grilles Incredible value for money Front porting (my preference) Cons: Although the tweeter has a soft dome, it can tire after an hour of listening (this speaker encourages you to turn up the volume) Female voice reproduction could be improved Vinyl sticker around the tweeter looks very cheap in close-up The conical Shape of the case makes convergence difficult. Not a neutral studio monitor if that's what you're looking for. Overall: highly recommended. Even though I'm tired during long sessions, I keep coming back for more. Transparency and neutrality aren't its strong points, but this speaker always makes me smile and adds charm to some of my favorite tracks. Sounds more like a $600 speaker, buy before the price goes up. Update: After 3 weeks of use, the maximum brightness has stabilized. or adjusted my ears. I no longer get tired after long listening sessions and notice that the bass is even more powerful. One downside is these speakers are voracious, give them a real 120+ WPC to get them singing. Very happy with my purchase, will continue working until I save up for a pair of Genelec 8050B or Neumann KH 120.

Pros
  • Well done
Cons
  • Faulty
