How about cork coasters? Actually not much, but I can say that they do what they have to do. They protect my tables and countertops. They're durable, fairly thick, and just the right size — plus — they pack away easily. With the holidays on the way, it's nice to know I won't have to hunt up and down for more hot pads when I do try to get all dishes on the table. In fact, I think they would make a nice symbolic Christmas present. They can be packed with cookbooks, cutlery or utensils as a nice addition. You can be sure that sooner or later everyone will find a use for it (ie just to give it away). Seriously, if you're looking for good hot pads, these will do the trick.
