Nice design but still a few problems

I got this for a new car. I have a similar item on another machine. This is the type that uses slightly different sized slots in a rubber cone to press against the vent ribs. This friction-type mount works surprisingly well. Instead, this Chongcin product uses a spring clamp mechanism. It seems to work"OK". Spring is pretty strong. The opposite sides of the clip have a very rubbery finish that grips the fins fairly well. First, the rubber material was covered with a kind of protective film and wasn't sticky at all. But once I found out I had to remove the protective film, it obviously worked a lot better. I don't know why they put a protective sheet there. But even so, I'm still not sure if it's as good as the previous design. The main problem is slippage and positioning. If you hang up the phone, the magnetic connection is no problem at all. The magnets are very strong and hold the phone very well. I use a metal disk fixed in a thin case. The problem is that the clip slips a bit when you try to position the phone or tilt it towards you. The plate with magnets rotates in all directions. And it's fairly rigid to prevent it from moving while driving. But as soon as you put the phone on and THEN try to adjust it, the clip mechanism begins to slide over the slats. I suppose once you have it set up this can be a minimal problem. But initial adjustment is rather disappointing as the swivel is stiffer than the clamp's holding power. So a lot of trial and error. Also, I usually try to position this type of magnetic mount in one of the bottom corners of the air vent. This leaves most of the ventilation unobstructed when the phone is attached. The angled design of this mount should help make the vent even clearer. But my new car has buttons just below the vent (see picture). The phone's weight sometimes causes the magnetic mount to depress these buttons (which, of course, isn't a good thing). This is especially true when I touch my phone. I've tried setting it higher to avoid accidentally pressing these buttons, but this configuration completely blocks the vent. All in all, this is a pretty well thought out product. The magnets are very strong when used with a matching metal disc. This is an attractive design. The spring clip is solid but slips when you try to adjust it on the fly. And the angled design makes it possible to press buttons under the vent when it's set low. In the end I find I like the other old design better. But based on your specific situation, this might be the best choice. In my case I will replace it with an older product in another car and see if it works better.
