After doing a lot of research on different types of zoom lenses, I settled on the Tamron AF 18-270MM VC lens. I am planning a trip to Alaska and was looking for a good lens with enough zoom to get close to the various wildlife I will encounter on a cruise/tour. I have a Tamron 28-300mm zoom with no stabilization which is a great lens but you will need a tripod to stabilize the lens at extreme zooms or to shoot at very high speeds and low ISO which is not always possible is. When I got the 18-270mm lens I tried it, great lens. The image stabilization is like a dream for me. I use the lens on a Canon Rebel XTI. I took lots of photos of the surroundings, flowers in the garden and birds flying around with and without stabilization. The stabilization worked with a bang. All images with it were clean, clear, crisp and had vivid colors. Of course, the camera settings help make the colors more vibrant, but the lens works as promised. I noticed a little barrel-shaped shrinkage in the mid-zoom range, but when I held the camera in the field I didn't notice it at all. Focusing indoors is a bit slow if you're shooting something without clear autofocus assist features, but still tolerable. On the outside, autofocus was quick and accurate. I was able to shoot birds in a tree at ISO 100 at 1/50 second and get sharp shots at 270mm using the camera's center focus. At 18mm you get a very good wide angle shot and unless you're shooting something with obviously sharp horizontal lines you won't notice any barrel distortion. I am very satisfied with this lens and can recommend it.
