Works right out of the box. All I had to do was plug the unit into an outlet, plug my regular power cord for my Christmas lights into the other end, and the button worked to turn them on and off from around the house. every time You don't have to fiddle with it or press it multiple times like most remote controls, it just works every time. It's a very solid feel and so far so good in rain and ice storms. However, it should be noted that the plugs are attached to the cables at right angles, so are thinner for some purposes, but you can only plug one into a two-plug socket. From an electrical standpoint this doesn't matter since most double wall outlets are plugged into the same circuit breaker anyway, but it does mean you need some sort of splitter to plug more than one wire into the same outlet. The easiest way to do this is to just buy a model that supports three slots alone if you need that capability. Again, what's amazing is that it just works - I didn't have to do anything but plug it in and click, let alone put the battery in as it's already in the control unit.
