Excellent mild* solvent for mixing art pigments with oil binders such as oil based crayons, oil pastels and oil paints with non-synthetic binders (e.g. safflower oil).* By gentle I mean just mild solvent properties, very similar to baby oil: it helps reduce the viscosity of the binder so the pigments can be more easily manipulated on the surface (i.e. it becomes more slippery so mixing is easier). Unlike mineral spirits or stronger resin based solvents, this will not work on waxes nor will it evaporate/dry out. Porous surfaces absorb and retain some of the oil, so I find it best to use a very small amount at a time with precision applicators (like disposable makeup brushes and sponges). In particular, primed and non-porous surfaces will increase drying time and may require additional fixatives or varnishes/sealers. I hope my notes are useful for you, art lovers!
