If you've ever used a UV-5r (a solid cheap walkie-talkie) it's the same with a few tweaks. In particular, the waterproof accessory is a pleasure to wear on anything that might get wet and has a beautiful design that ensures a secure connection. This means that with non-waterproof versions you will need new accessories. However, everything you really need is in the box. You get a basic earbud that you'll probably never use as it's an old 90's style plastic earbud. There is also a data cable made specifically for the new port. The remote mic actually surprised me as it's a little better quality than others I've seen with a good solid coil cable and decent build. Another slightly annoying difference with the uv-5r is that to toggle between frequency and channel mode you have to turn off the radio and restart while holding down the menu. It's also a reliable radio. Don't be put off by the buttons, you'll get used to them over time.
