I was always worried that we would lose power in summer storms. Sometimes we did, and I'd have to dig in the dark for a candle or flashlight, and there was always a chance the batteries were dead. Instead of going through this I decided to buy some of these plug in emergency lights. They are compact and the design is not flashy. I have one in my kitchen, one in the bathroom and one in our hallway. If the power fails, we have good light in almost all important areas. You can set them to (1) turn on automatically when power is lost (ie either the power goes out or they become unplugged from the wall) or (2) not turn on automatically. They don't feel hot at all and I've been pocketing them for weeks. The only issue I had is the red light that tells you charging/power is on. It's a bit bright so I had to place it in spots I couldn't see from my bed or dining table.
